CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

CHARITY HOPE VALENTINE: (Alto/Mezzo) The girl who wanted to be loved’. Our eponymous heroine is a taxi-dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. She is as she sounds; her three names sum her up well. Charity is kind, ambitious and in and out of love. A gullible, happy go lucky, girl next door.

HELENE: (Alto/Mezzo) A close friend to Charity, Helene works with her at the dance hall. Helene has probably been working at the Fandango Ballroom less time than Nickie but longer than Charity. She is feisty and confident.

NICKIE: (Alto/ Mezzo) A close friend to Charity, Nickie works with her at the dance hall. Nickie assumes the maternal role over the girls. She has seen it all and is quick to offer advice to Charity and the other girls. Like Charity though she aspires to get out.

OSCAR LINDQUIST: (Baritone) An educated, well-spoken American young man, shy, repressed, and gawky. He works as an actuary (the most boring job in the world). He meets Charity, falls in love with her but then struggles to come to terms with Charity’s past as a taxi-dancer.

VITTORIO VIDAL: (Tenor) A famous Italian movie star, smooth, modest, gentle soul. Requires Italian accent.

URSULA MARCH: Hot headed and jealous wife of Italian movie star, Vittorio Vidal. Has quite a flair for the dramatic.

HERMAN: (Tenor) The boss of the Fandango Ballroom. Not really well liked and quite authoritative but has a kind side.

DADDY BRUBECK (this role is gender-neutral): The leader of the Rhythm of Life Church. A spiritual, enigmatic but laid-back kind of person.

CARMEN: Another dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. Knows Charity, Nickie, and Helene. Very sarcastic.

ROSIE: The hot new girl at the Fandango Ballroom. Fresh off the bus and easily corrupted.

ENSEMBLE Sweet Charity is a brilliant ensemble show with fantastic song and dance sequences. There are many small, featured speaking roles in the show, as well as featured dancer roles. Some of the roles listed above are also members of the ensemble during parts of the show.

ACTING – READ

Director Carolanne Marano will have scripts for you at the audition and you will be doing a cold read from the show. If you have a learning difference and would appreciate an accommodation, please let us know.

VOCAL

Please come prepared to perform 2 minutes of an upbeat pop or Broadway song of your choice. Be prepared for us to stop you before the 2-minute marker. It’s always okay to start in the middle of a song; show off the best part of the song for your voice!  There is no wifi available, so be sure to download whatever backing track you’d like use; we will have the appropriate adaptors for your phone, tablet, or computer. Please no acapella singing.

CHOREOGRAPHY – DANCE

The combination for the dance audition will be available for you to learn starting a week before the audition on the IYT. (Link below) Ms. Marano will also be teaching the audition combination at an optional workshop on Friday, October 28, from 6:30 to 8PM at the Gary Taylor Dance Studio (250d Olmsted Blvd., Pinehurst).  There is no charge for this workshop.

At the audition, Ms. Marano or one of her students will review the combination with you but will not teach it; you are expected to come familiar with the choreography.

While there is dancing in this show, not all roles are dancing roles, and Ms. Marano has extensive experience working with non-dancers, movers, and professional dancers. There is a part for everyone in this show!

Choreography for those wishing to audition for Charity, Helene, and Nickie

SCRIPTS, CASTING, AND MEMORIZATION

You will sign out your script at auditions.  Please remember that these must be returned at the end of the show. You may write and highlight in this script. You will be asked to put down a $50 script deposit (cash or check) that will be returned to you when you return your script at the end of the show.  We will only cash checks IF a script isn’t returned.

Casting will be out by the Monday following auditions.

You will be asked to learn your lines over the December break, if you haven’t already done so prior to that. Everyone should be off book by January 3.
